The Cisco Remote Access exam (640-505), one of the larger hurdles you'll have to overcome as you make your way toward your Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) professional rating, trips up lots of candidates. Even if you have some experience with Cisco wide area networks (WANs), you're well advised to pick up a book like CCNP: Building Cisco Remote Access Networks Study Guide. It explains the material you'll be tested on in absolute terms (which means you can use it also as an on-the-job resource) and supplements the explanations with test-specific sections that show you how the material is likely to appear on the exam. This combined approach is good in that it will prepare you for both the content and the form of the exam. The book often makes side comments on, for example, what interpretation of debatable issues is likely to be considered "correct" in an exam question. Each chapter concludes with exam-like multiple-choice questions, which are followed by explanations of why the answer is what it is. Exercises make up some of the most useful parts of this book; in a typical one, you learn the process of setting up a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection with Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP).
